UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a girl containing several human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct personas, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms where their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
