The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
