Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals were killed and over 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
