Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a series of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
Summers stated in a statement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have contributed, enthusiastic about the promise of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their advancement".
Summers, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, announced on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Message Exchange
The freshly disclosed emails demonstrated that the economist corresponded with Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 arrest for alleged trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected his determination to depart.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the perspective he offered to the Board," the company commented.
Congressional Action
This announcement comes after the entire Congress of Congress voted on recently to approve a bill that would require the Department of Justice to make public its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will afterward move to the office of the White House for endorsement. He has stated he expects to approve the measure, after modifying his position on the matter following pressure from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-related emails disclosed by the Congressional committee recently included numerous prominent individuals in the billionaire's previous network, without indicating any criminal activity by those figures.
The messages indicated that the economist and Epstein dined together frequently, with he often attempting to connect the official to influential world leaders.
Individual Statement
After the emails were released with the wider community, the former official said he took "complete accountability for my misguided decision to persist in corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He further stated that he hoped "to reestablish confidence and repair relationships with the persons most important to me".
Career Background
The economist occupied high-level positions under Democratic administrations; acting as economic leader under President Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He led the university from five years and remains a academic there. When stating his withdrawal from public duties previously on Monday, he stated he would maintain his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following the economist's announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a liberal think tank in Washington where he was a prominent member, verified that he was not affiliated with the group.
Summers entered the directorate of the AI company, which makes the language model, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its chief executive OpenAI's head.
