Climate Heating in New England More Rapidly Than Most Places on Earth, Analysis Shows.

The US region famous for its colonial history, maple syrup and frigid, snow-covered winters is experiencing a rapid change. A recent study indicates that New England is warming more quickly than nearly any other place on the Earth.

Unprecedented Pace of Change

The speed of temperature increase in New England makes it the fastest-heating region of the contiguous United States, according to the study. The rate of its warming has apparently increased significantly in the past five years.

"The temperature is not only rising, it's accelerating," stated a primary researcher on the study. "It's really sped up in recent years, which was unexpected to me. Our regional climate is shifting in a new direction, after being largely consistent for millennia."

The analysis places the New England region among the most rapidly heating areas in the world, together with the Arctic and parts of Europe and China. "The region is now moving toward being like the south-eastern US," the scientist added.

Study Approach and Results

For the study, researchers analyzed multiple data sources on day and night temperatures and snowpack dating back to 1900. The analysis covered the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

They discovered that New England has warmed by an mean of 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the worldwide mean, with the planet warming by approximately 1.3°C in the same period.

"That is very fast heating, which is worrying," commented the study author.

Notable Warming Trends

  • Minimum temperatures are increasing faster than maximum temperatures.
  • Winters are warming at double the speed of other seasons.
  • The severe cold New England is known for is being diminished.

Oceanic Influences and the "Heat Battery"

A primary reason for this unusual accumulation of heat may be shifts in the Atlantic Ocean. The global seas are taking in more than 90% of the surplus thermal energy captured by greenhouse gases.

In the north Atlantic, an increase of cold, fresh water from Arctic ice melt is disrupting the Gulf Stream. This is pushing warmer water into the coastal waters, concentrating heat along the coastline that is then carried inland by wind patterns.

"Surplus thermal energy from climate change is being held in the sea like a huge storage unit," said the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the atmosphere and New England is a receiver of that energy."

Consequences on Culture and Extremes

Once seen as a mild climate haven, New England has suffered extreme climate events in recent years, including devastating flooding and extended dry spells.

The increasing temperatures poses a threat to iconic elements of local culture:

  • Syrup production is being affected by shifting seasonal patterns.
  • Cold-weather activities are impacted; an ice hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been canceled or moved repeatedly due to unsafe ice conditions.
  • Ski resorts have faced difficulties because of insufficient snow.

"I live just outside Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to skate on the ponds all the time," recalled the researcher. "That tradition has pretty much disappeared from much of southern New England."
