Chicago White Sox Sign Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Major Two-Year Contract.

In a major move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have welcomed infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a two-year contract for the accomplished player.

Contract Details and Incentives

The agreement grants a seven-figure signing bonus, payable within 30 days, combined with compensation of $16M for the 2026 season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.

Additionally, Murakami's 2027 salary may grow based on award achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for being named the MVP award.
  • $500K for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
  • $250K for finishing between fourth and tenth.
  • Another $250,000 for winning the top rookie honor.

The contract also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his consent and makes him a free agent at the end of the contract. Additional perks include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.

Transfer Payment and Team Legacy

As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows get a supplemental fee of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami will become the fourth player from Japan to suit up for the White Sox, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami while both were in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 in February, bolsters a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a last-place season, finishing at the bottom in the American League Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the previous campaign.

Having earned Central League MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he hit 56 home runs, surpassing the single-season record for a Japanese-born player formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.

His last year was shortened to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Despite recording 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Early in his career playing primarily at first base, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the semi-final against Mexico, he hit a victory-sealing two-base hit that scored teammates for a come-from-behind 6-5 victory. The very next day in the championship game against the Team USA, he hit a tying homer in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 championship win.

The lefty slugger is slated to be officially presented at a introductory event on the coming Monday.
