The British tennis star Emma Raducanu has pulled out of her remaining competitions in 2025 as a result of the illness she has been fighting for the last week and a half.
Raducanu, aged 22 was due to play in events in Asia but has decided to fly home to regain her health before starting plans for the 2026 season.
These plans will involve her coach Francisco Roig, as the pair will keep partnering again next season.
Raducanu underwent blood pressure monitoring during her first-round match against Ann Li in Wuhan last week and retired when trailing 6-1 4-1 on an oppressively humid day.
Another medical visit was necessary a visit from the doctor at the recent Ningbo Open, where she fell in a three-set match to local wildcard Zhu Lin in the first round.
Her movement was with clear difficulty in the deciding set against Zhu due to back discomfort that has affected her during parts of the season.
Those results signaled a promising season, in which Raducanu rose into the world's top 30 after a long gap for the first time since 2022, ended with three successive defeats.
She held three match points before losing to American player Jessica Pegula in round three in Beijing last month.
Raducanu won twenty-eight matches in the current season and made it to the semi-final round in the Washington tournament, but her most impressive week was at March's Miami Open.
As Britain's top player advanced to the quarters of this WTA 1000 tournament, overcoming Emma Navarro, the eighth seed during the tournament before losing in a three-set match to Pegula, ranked fourth.
She was coached by Mark Petchey from Miami until Wimbledon, with Roig assuming the role ahead of the US Open.
The original arrangement with the ex-coach of Rafael Nadal was through the season's conclusion but the partnership will continue, with a training session scheduled late this year.
